‘Surf’s
Up!’ A Celebration of Mid-Summer
A mid-summer
celebration wouldn’t be complete without something to do with surfing!
Monmo.Gallery and Framing is excited to be exhibiting for the first time,
the airbrushed ‘almost full-sized’ plywood surfboards of Jonathan Grange,
from Feb. 11th – 25th.
Jonathan’s
airbrushing passion has seen him go from painting trucks and public
facilities, (including the under-road tunnel in Murray’s Bay, on the Nth
Shore) to decorative artworks. A self taught artist, Jonathan has perfected
the airbrush medium and these current works show a glorious sunset through
the curl of a wave alongside famous N.Z surf locations. The multi-talented
Jonathan fabricates his own art surfboards, some complete with fins, out of
Marine Ply.
Accompanying the surfboards, are a selection of vintage surfing prints
especially imported for the occasion. These prints celebrate surfing in
Hawaii and Santa Monica, USA, both places associated with the birth of
surfing.
Between Feb.
25th and March 11th, Tauranga Pastel artist Michael
Sass will be exhibiting a number of his original artworks alongside very
affordable and beautiful Giclee Prints of the originals, on canvas. Michael
is well known for the style he has perfected in showing rocks and shells
above and below the surface of the water in beach and river scenes. His
attention to detail is legendary. Another self-taught artist, Michael has
had a lifelong commitment to painting (alongside his business interests) and
won many awards over the years. It is only in retirement that he can commit
himself to it totally.
Monmo.Gallery has a large upstairs space with an ever changing selection of
top quality, affordable indoor and outdoor artworks. The Gallery is also
home to two permanent collections . The Ronald Cometti Estate Collection;
original artwork by former Orewa resident Ronald Cometti, and the
‘poolepoetry’ Collection; Action-voice, a new genre in photo and verse by
Whangaparaoa resident, Russell Poole.
Monmo.Gallery and Framing specialises in photos onto canvas, and creative
conservation standard framing. You can find them at;
Upstairs,
Moana Court,350 Hibiscus Coast Hwy, Orewa, Ph 09-421-1888, Open 10-5

“I don’t know anything
about art, but I know what I like”, is a common statement heard at
monmo.Gallery.
Beauty is truly in the
eye of the beholder, and when we are looking to adorn the walls of our
houses or offices, we need to connect emotionally with the work, because we
have to live with it. A knowlege of art isn’t essential to making that
purchase.
Most people are looking
for something that has a connection to their lives, reflects their taste in
colours, or compliments their furnishings. Sometimes a title invokes images
and memories, and is a ‘must-have’.
We tend to iconic
images in New Zealand. Paintings of familiar surroundings, special holiday
places or just one of our favorite coastlines or lake views. Koru, Flax,
Nikau, Tui and other fauna and flora we associate with our home country are
favored images. Also, abstracts in colours that enhance our surroundings, or
shout their presence.
“I have two simple
rules when choosing artwork. It has to be well executed and I have to be
happy to see it on my wall”, says Moriyasu.
The art we choose can
compliment or dominate, depending on the decorating style, and how much of a
statement we want to make to ourselves on a daily basis, and also our
visitors on a more casual basis.
Outdoor wall art and
sculpture at the entry-way, often with a water feature is a lovely welcome
home. Many of the large pots available currently at
monmo.Gallery
can easily be turned into fountains.
monmo.Gallery
has also just received a new shipment of Jayeta Valentine iconic acrylics.
Her colourful and very New Zealand paintings are popular at home and abroad
with ex-pat. Kiwis. Come in and see the large Tritychs. We are often asked
for paintings over 1.5m wide. Here they are!
As always, we have a
myriad of original and affordable small gifts to suit every budget. Fabulous
gifts in wood, glass, ceramics and of course colourful and extraordinary
jewellery.
Education can only
enhance our viewing experiences, and with that in mind
monmo.Gallery
will begin a series of Gallery Walk-Throughs on Thursday and Friday
mornings only, starting Thursday, March 6th.
A 45 minute guided tour
of the 300sq. m. gallery, discussing the contemporary art on display from
throughout New Zealand can be organized by calling Monica or Warren at
09-421-1888.

Author/Natural History
Artist, Rodney
Times, 23/10/2008
A former freelance artist and illustrator in
the advertising industry in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, Ronald received annual
commissions from Rank Xerox (now Fuji Xerox) to produce 6 paintings per
year centered around conservation. Professor John Morton mostly supplied the
scientific notes, and the paintings were reproduced as an annual House
Calendar. Limited prints and sets were sent to every school in NZ.
Ronald always had a passionate interest in
NZ wildlife and natural history, and since 1980 worked exclusively in this
field.
He was the author and illustrator of four
books on NZ wildlife and natural history and illustrated several books
written or edited by Prof. John Morton, Professor Emeritus of the University
of Auckland. Before his death he completed an obligation to write and
illustrate another book entitled “New Zealand through Time”, encapsulating
NZ’s 80 million year history.
In his ‘spare time’ over the past 20 yrs,
Ron worked as a tour leader for American tour companies, leading Natural
History tours around NZ, Australia, the Sub-Antarctic Islands and was a
guest lecturer on several visiting Cruise Ships.
His work can be found in wildlife paintings
and wall charts for the NZ Geographic and Bird and Forest Magazines, and in
private collections here and overseas.
Some of his original artwork in acrylic and
pencil is on display at monmo.Gallery in Orewa. Enquiries can be directed to
them at 09-421-1888 or

Bare feet
and Budgie Smugglers Welcome!
Dress is not an issue at
monmo.Gallery. Being
beachside at the northern end of Orewa Beach means being open to anyone
that walks in the door. The casual and welcoming atmosphere encourages
families to take their time and enjoy the ambience. It’s also a great place
to introduce children to ‘Gallery Etiquette’, and encourage their artist
within.
Monmo.Gallery in Orewa Beach, is easily identified by the large
‘Orange Flamingo’ on the gallery signs.
This ‘gallery like no other’ is home to the largest
range of museum quality New Zealand fine art and craft north of the Auckland
Harbour Bridge. It showcases only the very best of NZ art and craft. Not
being a dealer gallery enables owner Monica Moriyasu to display all artists
all the time.
The N.Z butter yellow wall that greets you upon entry
features the artist or artists of the week, sometimes fine fabric art and
sculpture, sometimes oils and fine furniture.
Monica believes that art should be accessible to
everyone and that we are indeed poor emotionally and spiritually when we
don’t have art in our lives. Accessibility also refers to price, and
monmo.Gallery has
items priced ‘affordably’ as well as beyond. She would love for everyone to
be able to own an original piece of art work, and with this is mind has
selected an amazing range of items.
There is a general feeling of warmth and colour when
you enter the gallery. A red sofa and chairs allows for the contemplation of
artwork or just to put a weary body in for a read of the magazines available
for perusal. The 300 sq.m upstairs space opens onto a deck at the rear,
allowing for a view of popular Orewa Beach across the road.
Designer men’s ties and NZ wool carpet made to order,
Merino wool felted garments and handbags, glass, bronze, semi-precious
jewelry, and beautifully turned swamp and bush Kauri bowls are just a few
of the huge selection of fabulous crafts. The walls are hung with 3D
indoor/outdoor sculpture, oils, acrylics and watercolours alongside fine art
photography of a kind not found elsewhere. Some of the artists featured
also have work in the National Museum, Te Papa Tongarewa, in Wellington.
Many of the artists chose
monmo.Gallery to be
the only gallery in NZ featuring their work.
A small but eclectic selection of numbered fine art
prints by recognized NZ artists are also available for purchase and framing.
Gallery Manager, Warren Brown runs the in-house framing
and digital photo printing department. Photos printed onto canvas are
popular and make wonderful gifts.
Monmo.Gallery uses
only the highest quality papers, canvas and inks in printing, believing that
you cannot compromise quality.
Monmo.Gallery is
indeed a ‘Full Service’ Gallery.
