Michael Sass

Michael Sass immigrated to New Zealand from Knysna, South Africa in 2000 with his wife Kathy and their Staffordshire Terrier Sarah. As their elder daughter Tracey married kiwi fellow Darren, and they had moved to Tauranga from Te Puke, it was natural for Michael and Kathy to join them in that fair city. Their other daughter also now lives and works in Tauranga.

Having been in business all his life, Michael pursued art seriously for the first time when he semi-retired in 1998.

Art has always been his first love and although, during his school career, he won many prizes for art, he was not encouraged to do art as a career because it was 'not a proper job'.  Michael had been taught throughout his life to be ‘handy’ with his hands and was privileged to grow up with a father who had a fully equipped workshop with all the tools required to create.

Michael created a fabulous kitchen out of recycled indigenous timber for his and Kathy’s home in South Africa which was featured in the South African Garden and Home magazine.

Michael paints landscape realism in pastels and oils,  although his preference is for the versatility of pastel with its enormous range of colours,  its permanence and non-fade qualities. Michael’s forte is his ability to paint extra-large pastel paintings in landscape realism.  His attention to detail enhances his love of painting rocky rivers and lakes so that the rocks and pebbles can be seen under the water.  His unique style with pastels is something that he developed himself with time and practice and each new painting brings new ideas and excitement.
